Founded in 2017, to remind potential LOTA members that crappy operating will reward you with a dishonorary membership in this not-elite group. The character of the club members is best expressed in its motto:

"Crappy operators have a real bad case of the stupids" - Anonymous (2013)

LID is a very old amateur radio designation for a crappy operator that allegedly stood for LICENSE IN DOUBT.

This website is established to try to improve the operating skills and etiquette of amateur radio operators by shaming the incompetents.

In recent years too many irresponsible and marginally qualified people have been able to obtain US amateur radio licenses for a number of factors including:

1. Dumbing down of licensing requirements

2. The current trend of the "gimme generation" where others' desires are ignored if they conflict with their personal wants

LOTA NON-HONOREES AIM TO….

Foster and practice a low standard of operating ability and behaviour on the amateur bands.
Be inconsiderate to other amateurs at all times.
Be a real demonstrator of the selfish ME generation - it does not matter what other operators desire, they must abandon their preferences and honor only MINE

BECOMING A NON-HONOREE

If you have a genuine love of irritating other amateur operators, and enjoy socialising with others of like interest then LOTA is just right for you. It takes some work to join - it’s not simply a matter of filling in a form and sending off a check. Membership is free!

First, someone must nominate you - based on their experience of you having demonstrated a real lack of understanding of amateur radio principles and traditions along with your sponsor’s belief that you will live up to the aims of the organization that are listed above. You cannot request enrollment, it is only earned by your demonstrated lack of operating etiquette.

Once you have been nominated, you are automatically added to the organization membership. You cannot refuse the nomination as you have earned it as acknowledged by experienced and traditional amateur radio operators who observed and commented on your poor behavior

A major symptom of this is the failure of common sense operating etiquette. As an old time operator (licensed 60 years with the Amateur Extra Class license earned at the FCC office before the VECs were authorized), I like to work DX and usually call CQDX. Way too many times, a US domestic station will respond. True that an inattentive operator might miss the DX part of the call. In those cases I usually send QRZ DX NO USA or QSY UR NOT DX. For most, but unfortunately not all, this solves the problem.

An example of this lack of common sense is from 17 meters FT8 which qualifies this LID for membership:

I then QRTed for breakfast. While dining, we get a landline call. The XYL answered it and told the caller I was eating breakfast so not available. He insisted to speak so I responded that I was eating. He asked if he could call back so I asked who he was. The poor baby said he got the text message from me about the Asia thing and said he looked at my website and didn't like it. "Too bad" I replied and hung up on him.

This is a new award the TURDKEY award granted to KC3IRG. On 40 meters which has an overabundance of lids, this fellow deliberately and maliciously QRMed me after I was calling CQ DX and he responded several times. Finally he started calling CQ on the QRG I was on. When I QRTed, he did. I came back on later and he did the same deliberate interference in violation of reg 47 C.F.R. § 97.101(d). A complaint has been filed with the FCC with complete documentation and recommendation for severe disciplinary action to alert others that this will not be tolerated.
